A staircase, during and after cleaning
The carpet is a woven two-tone, with bands of oatmeal alternating with bands of blue-grey. In the left photograph the oatmeal bands have gone orange-brown with traffic soil, and the extraction hose is still lying across the treads. In the right photograph the same carpet reads evenly again and the banding shows as the pattern.
Stairs are the slowest surface in any job. Every step has three faces, none of which a machine head can sit flat on, and all of them are worked by hand from the bottom of the flight to the top.

Why the colors return
What changed between these two photographs is a layer of dust off the top of the pile. Dust scatters light instead of letting it reflect off the dyed fiber, so every color reads a shade duller and the contrast in the pattern drops away.
Remove the dust and the color reads as it was dyed. Restoring the color describes dust removal rather than dye. No dye, color or coating was applied to this rug.
