Along the Hudson at Fort Lee, Edgewater and Cliffside Park there are high-rise condominium buildings where the practical constraints are the service elevator, the building's rules about working hours and the fact that everything has to be carried through a shared lobby. Inland at Ridgewood, Tenafly, Ho-Ho-Kus and Ramsey the stock is older detached housing on larger lots, frequently with hand-knotted rugs over hardwood and carpeted stairs that were fitted decades ago. The rug work in particular concentrates here: more wool, more oriental, more pieces where the fiber has to be identified and the dyes tested before anything gets wet.

More of the rug work in Bergen involves hand-knotted wool and older orientals than anywhere else we cover. Those get the fiber identified and the dyes tested in a hidden corner before anything else happens, because red and indigo next to a cream ground is exactly the combination that bleeds.
