The week-later problem
The sequence customers describe is consistent. The carpet is cleaned and it smells fine. Somewhere between five and fifteen days later the smell is back, usually worse in the afternoon and worse in warm weather, and the customer concludes that the cleaning did not work.
The cleaning worked on the carpet. The smell was never in the carpet.
Where the contamination sits
When a dog or a cat has an accident, gravity does most of the damage in the first thirty seconds. Liquid passes through the carpet pile, which is designed to let liquid through, and reaches the padding underneath. Padding is foam or fiber with air in it, and it absorbs a remarkable volume, several times what the carpet above it holds. From there, if there is enough of it, it reaches the subfloor: plywood, which is porous, or concrete, which is more porous than people expect.
So the visible mark on the carpet is the smallest part of the contamination. It is the top of a cone that widens as it goes down.
Urine itself is not particularly smelly when fresh. What produces the characteristic smell is what happens next: bacteria break the urea down, and the by-products of that process are the ammonia note and, in cats especially, the sulphurous one. That process needs moisture, and it slows almost to a stop when things are dry.
That explains the timing. Cleaning the carpet adds moisture and restarts a bacterial process that had gone quiet. It continues as the padding dries slowly over the following days. Warmth speeds it up, which is why the smell is worse on a hot afternoon and why the room seems fine in January.
What wicking does to the stain
The same mechanism explains the ring. As the padding dries, moisture moves upward through the carpet backing carrying dissolved contamination with it, and it deposits that contamination at the surface where the water evaporates. The result is a brown or yellow ring appearing in a spot that looked clean two days ago.
The cleaner did not miss a spot. Material has arrived at the surface that was not at the surface during the visit.
Removal versus masking
Masking means adding something that smells stronger or more pleasant than what is there. Scented sprays, deodorizing powders, carpet fresheners and plug-ins all work for a time and then stop, because none of them removes anything. Powders have a second problem: they settle into the base of the pile where the vacuum does not reach, and they stay there.
Removal means getting the contamination out of the material it is in. That requires reaching the depth it reached, which means either treating through the carpet into the padding, or in bad cases lifting the carpet to treat the padding and subfloor directly and replacing the padding where it is beyond saving.
A third approach is an enzyme product poured on the surface. Enzymes do work, because they break down the organic material the bacteria feed on, but they only work where they physically reach and they need to stay wet long enough to act. A capful sprayed on top of the pile reaches about a fifth of the problem.
How to tell how bad it is before anybody cleans
Two things help.
Smell it low. Get your face close to the carpet in the suspect area and smell it there, not from standing height. Then press down hard with your palm and smell again. If pressing releases a noticeable wave, there is liquid contamination in the padding rather than a surface mark.
Look at it in the dark. Urine fluoresces under UV light. An inexpensive black-light torch shows contamination that is invisible in daylight, and it usually shows a great deal more than expected. Many households find nine spots where they assumed two.
Both are worth doing before you book, because the scope of the job is completely different between one accident and a decade of them.
What we do about it
Treatment goes to the depth the contamination reached, which is decided by inspection rather than by a standard package. Where it is surface-level and recent, extraction with the right pre-treatment usually deals with it fully. Where liquid reached the padding, the treatment has to go through the carpet into the pad. Where the padding is saturated after years of repeat accidents in the same spot, the padding is the problem, and replacing that section is what resolves it.
We also say when it will not fully resolve. Old urine changes wool and some synthetic dyes chemically. The color is altered rather than covered, and no cleaning restores a bleached patch. We tell you that before the work begins.
What to do in the first ten minutes
If you catch an accident fresh, what you do immediately matters more than what anybody does later.
Blot, do not rub. Press a thick towel down hard and stand on it if necessary. The aim is to lift liquid out before it reaches the pad, and rubbing pushes it sideways and down while distorting the fiber.
Rinse with cold water and blot again. Repeat until what comes up on the towel is clean. Cold, not hot: heat can set the protein.
Do not use anything containing ammonia. Cats treat ammonia as urine and return to the spot.
Then get air onto it. A fan pointed at the area for a few hours does more than most products.
What to ask
If a pet smell returns after cleaning, the treatment did not reach the depth of the contamination. Ask whoever cleans it how they intend to treat the padding. An answer that covers the carpet only will not resolve the odor.
