Fairfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1798, with 7,872 residents at the 2020 census. Great Piece Meadows marshland covers about 1,170 acres. Van Ness House (c. 1720), on the National Register since 1977 and Fairfield Dutch Reformed Church, congregation from 1720, present building 1804 are here. Locally it is read by its sections, Clinton, Clinton Park, and a job is quoted on the one you are in rather than on the town line. Created in 1798 as Caldwell Township and renamed Fairfield in 1963; it reclassified from borough to township in 1978 to qualify for federal revenue sharing. It was the least densely populated municipality in Essex County in 2020, about 777 people per square mile. It borders North Caldwell, West Caldwell, East Hanover Township, Lincoln Park, Montville.
