The name is disputed but is most likely a contraction of the Delaware Indian term "Mah-Ho-Ho-Kus", meaning "the red cedar"; residents are called Ho-Ho-Kusites. It borders Hillsdale, Ridgewood, Saddle River, Waldwick, Washington Township.
