Settled as "Bottle Hill" around 1715, renamed Madison in 1834, and incorporated in 1889 after seceding from Chatham Township. Nicknamed "The Rose City" for a flourishing rose-growing and greenhouse industry that developed after the railroad arrived. Ranked first in New Jersey Monthly's 2019 "Best Places to Live.". It borders Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Harding Township, Morris Township, Florham Park.
