The borough is named for a rope-operated ferry across the Hackensack River, in use from 1659 until a Bergen Turnpike bridge replaced it in 1826. A 20th Century-Fox nitrate film storage vault here burned on July 9, 1937, one of the notable fires of the early film industry.
