Ridgefield is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1892, with 11,501 residents at the 2020 census. Housing units grew from 4,120 in 2000 to 4,237, at densities near 1,580 to 1,625 units per square mile. Morsemere was laid out and named by a real estate development company in honor of Samuel F. B. Morse, who owned large tracts here in the mid-19th century. Sits where the Hudson Palisades descend into the Meadowlands and the Hackensack River flood plain. Informally divided into three sections by terrain: Ridgefield in the valley and on the first hill, Morsemere to the north, and Ridgefield Heights on the second hill at the eastern edge. Locally it is read by its sections — Morsemere, Ridgefield Heights, Grantwood, Undercliff Junction — and a job is quoted on the one you are in rather than on the town line. The original 118-mile New Jersey Turnpike ended in Ridgefield at an interchange with Route 46 when it opened in 1952, until the 1964 extension carried it to the George Washington Bridge; the western spur was added in the 1970s and rejoins on the borough's west side. The area was part of Myndert Myndertsen's 1642 patroonship of Achter Kol, later abandoned. It borders Carlstadt, Cliffside Park, Fairview, Fort Lee, Little Ferry.
