The township is what was left of Lodi Township after neighboring municipalities carved off boroughs, described by a local historian as the portion others did not want because of the cost of paving roads and schooling children. Repeated state proposals to merge it into its neighbors have found little support among residents. It borders Hackensack, Little Ferry, Teterboro, Garfield, Lodi.
