Formed in 1894 out of Orvil and Washington townships during the "Boroughitis" wave that created 26 Bergen County boroughs in that single year, with boundaries repeatedly adjusted until the 1960s. It was the world headquarters of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) from the 1970s until the 2015 bankruptcy, and the Mercedes-Benz USA campus it lost in 2015 is now a mixed-use property. It borders Park Ridge, River Vale, Upper Saddle River, Woodcliff Lake, Pearl River.
