Rockaway is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1894, with 6,598 residents at the 2020 census. Joseph Jackson House (NRHP-listed Dutch Colonial building, now the public library) and First Presbyterian Church (built 1832) are here. Rockaway Village existed roughly 160 years (from about 1730) before incorporating as a separate borough from Rockaway Township in 1894, with additional territory annexed in 1908; the 2003 film The Station Agent was partly filmed here. It borders Denville Township, Rockaway Township.
The housing in Rockaway
Large, affluent houses were built along Newark Street (now Main Street) and Church Street during the Civil War-era boom (1860s-1880s). Several Revolutionary War-period homes survive in the borough center, including the 'three Jackson houses'. A building with its own rules is a different appointment from a house with a driveway, and both are ordinary once they are known in advance.
