Riverdale was incorporated in 1923 from portions of Pequannock Township, partly over a dispute about school space; 25.1% of residents reported Italian ancestry in the 2000 Census. It borders Butler, Kinnelon, Pequannock Township, Bloomingdale, Pompton Lakes.

The Van Cortlandt/Schuyler House, a two-and-a-half-story fieldstone-and-frame dwelling, is one of the few documented colonial-era structures still standing. Construction of I-287 and NJ Route 23 in the 20th century demolished part of the historic downtown and reshaped the built environment.
