Washington is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1798, with 18,197 residents at the 2020 census. Schooley's Mountain is an unincorporated highland community within the township. German Valley Historic District and Schooley's Mountain are here. Locally it is read by its sections, Long Valley, Bartley, Beattystown, Drakestown, Pottersville, Schooley's Mountain, and a job is quoted on the one you are in rather than on the town line. The township's Long Valley section was called German Valley until anti-German sentiment during World War I prompted the name change; a 1983 effort to rename the entire township to Long Valley failed. It was among New Jersey's original townships incorporated in 1798, from portions of Roxbury Township. It borders Chester Township, Mount Olive, Tewksbury Township, Lebanon Township, Mansfield Township.

The German Valley Historic District (69 acres) in the Long Valley section contains Greek Revival, Federal, and Late Victorian buildings dating from about 1750 through the 1870s, including an 1832 Gothic-style church and an 1830 stone schoolhouse. Long Valley (called German Valley until World War I) was settled by a Palatinate German farming community; fieldstone and wood farmhouses and mills survive from the 18th and 19th centuries. Older stock brings staircases built before any machine made for them existed, so those treads are worked by hand either way.
