Lodi takes its name from Lodi in Lombardy, Italy, and was formed in 1894 from the now-defunct Lodi Township (today South Hackensack) and Saddle River Township (today Saddle Brook). Dye and chemical plants replaced the earlier textile mills after the 1940s, and three fatal explosions followed: one on the Napp Technologies site in 1969 (one killed), one at Mallinckrodt Chemical in 1973 (seven killed) and one at Napp Technologies in 1995 (five killed). It borders Garfield, Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Maywood, Rochelle Park.
