North Plainfield is a borough in Somerset County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1885, with 22,808 residents at the 2020 census. Washington Park Historic District is here. The borough became an independent municipality in 1885; the separate North Plainfield Township created from Warren Township in 1872 later became Green Brook Township. In 1902 the Legislature approved measures that would have moved the borough into Union County or merged it with the City of Plainfield, neither of which happened. It borders Watchung, Green Brook Township, Plainfield.
