Incorporated in 1894 from portions of Palisades Township during the "Boroughitis" wave that created 26 Bergen County boroughs that year; a portion was annexed by Alpine in 1904. Rail access made it the site of Camp Merritt, a World War I debarkation point for more than a million troops, and of a chicken hatchery that was the world's largest by 1897. It borders Alpine, Bergenfield, Demarest, Dumont, Tenafly.
