Demarest is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, incorporated in 1903, with 4,981 residents at the 2020 census. Duck Pond on the Tenakill Brook and the former Demarest train station, restored by the borough and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004 are here. Formed in 1903 from portions of Harrington Township and Palisades Township. The name comes from the Demarest family and from the Demarest train station, itself named for Ralph S. Demarest, a director of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey who served in both houses of the state legislature; the borough bought the station site in 1978 and restored it. It borders Alpine, Closter, Cresskill, Dumont, Haworth.
