Formed on November 8, 1894 out of parts of three townships (Franklin, Hohokus and Orvil) during the "Boroughitis" wave that created 26 Bergen County boroughs in that single year. The borough is named for Joseph Warner Allen, a surveyor for the Erie Railroad. It borders Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River, Waldwick, Wyckoff.
