The borough seceded from Englewood Township in 1895 during the "Boroughitis" wave that created 26 Bergen County boroughs in 1894 alone, with William Outis Allison as its first mayor. It hosts the world headquarters of CNBC and the North American headquarters of LG and Unilever, and was formerly home to Ferrari and Maserati North America. It borders Englewood, Fort Lee, Tenafly.
