Scope

What this covers

Carpet is cleaned by hot-water extraction. Heated cleaning solution is injected into the pile under pressure and drawn back out through the same head, carrying the soil with it. That is what lifts the grey traffic lane in a hallway, and it removes what a vacuum compacts instead of collecting. We work in houses and apartments across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties, using non-toxic biodegradable products that are safe around family and pets. Most carpet is walkable within about two hours and dry the same day. Send a photo of the area and we will tell you what to expect before you book.

  • Wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms, hallways and living rooms
  • Carpeted stairs, treads, risers and stringers
  • Traffic lanes, entryways and landings
  • Pet stains and pet odor, down into the padding
  • Spills, wine, coffee, grease and ink
  • Apartments, condominiums and rental turnovers

Detail

Where the soil sits

A vacuum reaches the surface. The color change in a traffic lane sits two layers below it, and a pet accident sits below that again.

Extraction reaches the second and third layers. A stain that keeps returning sits in the fourth.

Common questions

What people want to know before booking

The dark lane in a hallway

The strip of carpet between a front door and a kitchen is usually darker than the carpet on either side of it. That is soil ground into the base of the pile by shoes, and vacuuming presses it down further. Extraction reaches it because the solution goes to the backing and is drawn back out with the grit. Carpet that is worn in that strip will not always return to new, and we tell you before the work begins.

Pet accidents that keep coming back

A pet stain that reappears a week after cleaning was never fully removed. The liquid reached the padding and rose back through the carpet as it dried. Odor and pet stains are the two subjects customers mention most often in our reviews, and both are treated below the surface. Where urine has soaked through, the odor sits in the padding, so the padding is treated as well as the pile.

Whether the house smells of chemicals afterwards

It does not. We use non-toxic, biodegradable products that are safe around family and pets. No ventilation is required afterwards and pets can stay in the home. Customers report that the house smelled clean rather than smelling of cleaning products.

How long a room is out of use

Carpet is normally walkable in about two hours and dry the same day. Before we start we tell you which rooms to stay off and for how long. If a room has to be back in use quickly, say so when you book and we bring air movers to shorten the drying time.

The method

How a carpet clean is performed

Hot-water extraction does two things in one pass. Heated cleaning solution is injected into the pile under pressure, and half a second later it is drawn back out through the same head, carrying the soil with it. Most carpet manufacturers specify this method because whatever goes into the carpet comes out of it again.

A vacuum removes what sits loose on the surface. It does not reach the film of grit, skin, pollen and street dirt that has worked down to the point where the fibers meet the backing, and that is where the color change in a traffic lane comes from. The carpet in that strip is loaded with soil rather than worn out.

Before extraction the room is vacuumed, and edges and stairs are worked by hand where the machine head cannot sit flat. Stains are pre-treated and given time to break down instead of being scrubbed, which is what fuzzes and permanently distorts carpet fiber.

Stairs take the longest

A staircase has three surfaces on every step: the tread, the riser and the carpeted stringer at each side. Each one takes soil differently. Treads collect ground-in traffic soil, risers collect scuff marks, and the stringers collect the soil a vacuum pushes to the side.

Stairs cannot be cleaned with the machine head alone. They need a hand tool and a technician working on every step. It is the slowest part of most visits and the part where the difference is most visible, because a staircase is seen from directly above in full light.

Pet stains are a padding problem

When a dog or a cat has an accident, the liquid does not stop at the carpet. It passes into the pad underneath and often into the subfloor below. Cleaning the surface alone leaves the carpet looking correct for about a week, after which the odor returns or a yellow-brown ring rises through the pile as the padding dries. That process is called wicking, and it is why the same stain appears to come back.

The treatment goes to the contamination where it sits rather than where it shows. Odor removal and pet stain removal are the two subjects Google review tags surface most often on our listing after the general ones.

The products we use

Non-toxic, biodegradable products, safe around family and pets. No room needs to be aired out afterwards and pets can stay in the home. The comment we receive most often is that the house smelled fresh rather than smelling of cleaning products.

Booking a carpet cleaning visit

Clear light items from the floor before we arrive: toys, shoes and laundry baskets. We move furniture that two people can lift safely and put it back. Tell us about pets, about any stain you already know is stubborn, and about any room that has to be usable again by a set time, because all three change how the visit is planned.

We work across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties and take bookings at any hour. Send a photo of the worst area with your inquiry. It is the fastest way to receive a clear answer about what will come out.

Frequently asked questions

Question 1: How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?

Every 6 to 12 months for most homes. Traffic and pets decide where in that range a home sits: a busy hallway in a house with a dog and children is at the six-month end, and a guest bedroom nobody walks through can go a year or longer. Most residential carpet manufacturers also expect periodic hot-water extraction as a condition of their warranties.

Question 2: How long does carpet take to dry?

Most carpet is walkable within about two hours and dry the same day. Thick pile, cold weather and closed rooms all slow it down. We bring air movers when a room has to be back in use quickly, and we tell you before we start which rooms to keep off and for how long.

Question 3: Will cleaning make my carpet get dirty faster afterwards?

It should not. Where it happens, the cause is detergent residue left by a previous clean, which stays sticky and attracts soil. Extraction rinses the solution back out of the pile, so what goes in comes out again.

Question 4: Can you get an old stain out?

Sometimes, and we tell you which before you book. Fresh spills come out most reliably. Old pet urine, bleach and some dyes change the carpet fiber itself, and cleaning cannot restore a fiber that has lost its color. Send a photo and we will tell you what will come out and what will not.

Question 5: Do you move the furniture?

We move what two people can lift safely and put it back afterwards. Beds, dressers and anything holding electronics or glass are best emptied and cleared before we arrive. If you prefer that we clean around larger pieces, tell us when you book.
