Scope

What this covers

We clean fabric and leather upholstery in the home: sofas, sectionals, armchairs, recliners, ottomans and dining chairs. Fabric is cleaned with a low-moisture method, using enough solution to release the soil without saturating the padding underneath, and an unseen part of the fabric is tested before any cushion is cleaned. Leather is cleaned and then conditioned, because leather that has dried out is the condition behind most of the leather calls we take. Fabric sofas are usually dry in 4 to 8 hours and leather is faster. Sofa cleaning is the second most mentioned service in our Google reviews after carpet, and it is booked as a visit of its own.

Detail

Four materials in one piece of furniture

Each material reacts differently to water, which is why upholstery is cleaned with a fraction of the moisture used on carpet.

Low-moisture cleaning is used because foam holds water for days and the middle of a cushion cannot be aired out.

Common questions

What people want to know before booking

Whether the fabric will shrink or mark

Upholstery fabric is less forgiving than carpet, so an inconspicuous area is tested first and the work is done with a low-moisture technique. The fabric is cleaned and extracted without the padding underneath being saturated. Water marks and shrinkage come from over-wetting. If a fabric fails the test, we tell you and stop rather than proceeding.

The cushions that get used

Body oil, hair product and perspiration build up on the two cushions everyone uses and on the arm beside the remote, which is why a sofa often looks even at one end and grey at the other. Those areas are pre-treated before the general clean, so the whole piece comes back evenly.

Leather that has gone dull and stiff

Leather near a sunny window or a radiator dries out, loses color and stiffens. Cleaning removes surface dirt and a little more oil with it, which can leave the hide looking worse. The leather is cleaned and then conditioned, which restores flexibility and depth of color. One customer described the result as looking expensive again, soft to the touch and smelling of leather.

How long before the sofa can be used

Fabric sofas are usually dry in 4 to 8 hours and leather is faster. The range depends on the fabric, the room and the weather. If the sofa is the only seating for that evening, tell us when you book and we bring air movers.

The method

Why upholstery is a different job from carpet

Carpet is one fiber on one backing, laid flat, and it tolerates a large volume of water. A sofa combines several materials at once: the face fabric, the sewing thread, the foam inside, the deck under the cushions and the frame. Each reacts differently to moisture. Carpet volumes of water leave the padding wet for days, allow the frame to mark the fabric from below, and produce a water ring where the wet area met the dry area.

Upholstery is therefore cleaned with a low-moisture method: enough solution to break the bond between the soil and the fiber, extracted immediately, with the foam underneath left dry. It takes longer per square foot than carpet, and it is what the material requires.

The test patch

Before any cushion is cleaned, an unseen part of the same fabric is tested: under a skirt, on a back panel or beneath a seat cushion. Some fabrics release their dye. Certain silks, viscose blends and older linens mark with plain water. Finding that on a back panel costs nothing. Finding it on a seat cannot be undone.

If a piece fails the test, we say so and stop. A cleaned sofa you no longer want in the room is the worse outcome.

Where the soil sits

A three-seat sofa is rarely soiled evenly. The two cushions in regular use are darker than the third, one arm is worse than the other, and the fabric behind the headrest carries a shadow.

That soil is body oil, hair product and everyday skin contact, and it differs from the crumbs and dust that fall into the crevices. It is pre-treated before the general clean, so the piece does not come back clean only in the places nobody touches.

Under the cushions is a separate matter. Coins, hair, food and most of the pet hair collect there, and that area is emptied and cleaned before the cushion faces are touched.

Leather is cleaned and then conditioned

Most leather calls describe the same condition: a sofa that sat near a window or a radiator, went dull and stiff, and began to look old early. Sunlight and dry indoor heat draw the oils out of the hide. Cleaning removes surface dirt and a little more oil with it, so cleaning on its own can leave leather looking worse.

The two steps go together. The hide is cleaned, then conditioned to restore flexibility and depth of color. A customer whose leather sofa had gone lifeless beside a bright window described the result afterwards as expensive-looking, soft, and smelling of leather again.

Booking an upholstery visit

Tell us how many pieces there are, roughly what they are made of, and whether there are pets in the home. The cleaning code from the manufacturer, the letter on the tag under a cushion, is useful if you have it, and we check it ourselves before starting.

Upholstery is often booked with carpet in the same visit. The furniture is already being moved, and a clean carpet under a soiled sofa makes the sofa look worse than it did before.

Frequently asked questions

Question 1: Can you clean both fabric and leather sofas?

Yes, with different products and techniques for each. Fabric is cleaned by low-moisture extraction after a colorfastness test. Leather is cleaned and then conditioned, which is the step most often skipped and the reason leather ends up stiff and faded.

Question 2: How long does a sofa take to dry?

Fabric sofas usually dry in 4 to 8 hours. Leather dries faster because the cleaning never soaks in. We bring air movers when a room has to be back in use quickly.

Question 3: Will my upholstery shrink after cleaning?

No. We use low-moisture techniques and test the fabric before starting, which prevents both shrinkage and water marks. Over-wetting causes both, and low-moisture cleaning exists to avoid it.

Question 4: Do you clean sectionals and dining chairs too?

Yes: sectionals, recliners, armchairs, ottomans, headboards and dining chairs including the seat pads. Tell us roughly how many pieces there are and what they are made of when you book, so we bring the right products.

Question 5: Can you get pet smell out of a couch?

Usually. Pet odor in upholstery sits in the foam of the cushions rather than on the fabric, so it is treated at that depth, the same way pet stains in carpet are. Where a cushion core is heavily contaminated, we tell you what cleaning will and will not achieve before the work begins.
